Developing a New Play with Movie Night

Last spring, I got the chance to be in my first new work, Movie Night by Taylor Williams, directed by Nicholas Kowerko. This inventive and hilarious script adopted the style of old silent movies in melodrama and content.

I played several roles, including President Leslie Lane in “Invasion!” which alluded to films such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Old Man Highstaff in “The Red Specter”, who was a mysterious person with an unexpected true identity inside of a classic murder mystery centered around a wealthy family. I also played the Title Card Announcer, a role which helped orient the audience in the many different film-like sections of the play.

It was a challenge to work on such a new script and have flexibility when we got new pages, but I truly enjoyed every minute. It was exciting to work on a comedic piece and use physical and vocal acting choices to differentiate between my multiple characters.

(spoiler alert: Old Man Highstaff was really the secret daughter of the patriarch of the wealthy Burlybust family all along.)
